Τι είδους αδυναμίες, δυσκολίες, εμπόδια εμφανίστηκαν κατά την εφαρμογή του Προγράμματος;

Description of the initiative
4. Title of the initiative proposed:
“Focusing and Thinking At the Edge: The Learner’s Learner, Developing the implicit knowledge and creativity of students”
5. Description of the initiative in maximum 500 words, clearly specifying what is the innovation/change introduced compared to the previous situation.
In Focusing&TAE (F&T) we support and facilitate learners of any kind and age to “dip into the larger realm at the edge of thinking” in a specific bodily-felt experiential way, while we, educators or peer-learners and Focusing-partners, are being present, facilitating them in their learning explorations. F&T are based on the theory of “Experiencing and the Creation of Meaning” and the “Philosophy of the Implicit” of the philosopher Eugene Gendlin, collaborator of Carl Rogers in the late 1960s in designing a series of research studies. Both methods/processes and practices are associated with Student-centered Learning (SCL) (which is broadly based on constructivism) (read more: https://www.esu-online.org/?project=time-student-centred-learning and http://pascl.eu/), with Carl Rogers’ theory of education (Humanistic and Person-centered Education) and, of course, with Dewey’s, Piaget’s work and the like (e.g. Michael Polanyi’s notion of tacit knowledge, Edward de Bono’s lateral thinking, Guy Claxton’s work, the notion of cognitive unconscious, embodiment and embodied/situational knowledge/intelligence). Focusing-experiential Learning is to be seen under the aspect of (Experiential) Phenomenology and the application of Pragmatism in Education. It stands close to Mindfulness-based Learning. They both “focus your attention inside your body, encourage attentiveness and acknowledge what is there without judging it” (but in Focusing we give strong emphasis on inner-dialogue and on ‘going-deeper-and-deeper’).
TAE (as a method and procedure) can be seen as a dynamic learning-to-learn skill for critical thinking and creativity as much as a really modern tool, practically inexhaustible, for fostering innovation, transformative learning, qualitative research and theory construction, a tool which is characterized by really high motivational impact on the learner, and deeply respectful interactions between learners. In fact, interaction, relating/relations, experience/experiencing, attitude and learning processes are being put first with emphasis on the subtle, bodily-felt, holistic, non-yet-symbolized felt-meanings (or felt-senses).
TAE is based on the experiential process of Focusing (http://www.focusing.org/sixsteps.html) which was originally described as a 6-step dynamic process with preparatory phases (e.g. Clearing-A-Space: facilitative as a preparation-for-learning phase). TAE can be taught in 3 phases with 14 (dynamic) steps in total.
F&T address “the learner in the learner” and “a different level of knowledge that you cannot access quite so directly”. TAE specifically combines the conceptual, analytical, evaluative way of thinking and ‘reflection’ (logic, concepts, abstract patterns) with the non-evaluative, intuitive, immediate ‘awareness’ in the moment (felt senses, experiences, experiential processes, experiencing).
Both encourage any form or way (any ‘modality’: bodily, auditory, visual, textual) to move “from the implicit to the explicit, from the felt sense to any kind of symbolization”. As Gendlin writes, “feeling without symbolization is blind; symbolization without feeling is empty”. We stay near the student’s world and tacit knowledge during this process of unfolding. We meet them in their own, typical way they perceive and construct their worldview, their ‘knowledge’ and inner life. Innovation comes from “the creation of (new) meaning” but also from the freshly symbolization of “felt/embodied meanings”.
Focusing, especially, ceases to be just “technic” or “tool” and becomes life-skill, natural way of living and learn. They ideally complement special education and are excellent for interaction with the arts, literature and language.

6. Please explain in maximum 100 words in which way this initiative is innovative from the point of view of the use of technology for educational purposes.
7. Please explain in maximum 100 words in which way this initiative is innovative from a pedagogical/educational point of view.
F&T:
8. What is/are the main target group(s) of the initiative?
Teachers, Students (in every educational level), School Pedagogy Counselors, Education Stakeholders and Policy Makers, Parents, School Psychologists, Psychologists and Psychotherapists, anyone interested in personal development.
9. When did the initiative start (month and year)?
The initiative started on November 2014,
with a one-day-workshop [“Thinking At the Edge (TAE or Experiential Thinking)”] supported by the Open Discovery Space in Ellinogermaniki Agogi,
after several years of application in many other forms in my school,
e.g. mainly in combination with collaborative learning, in school mediation and in training students to become peer mediators by using Focusing in combination with Marshall Rosenberg’s “Non-violent Communication” -or NVC- and Carl Rogers’ encounter groups.
10. How many months is the initiative supposed to run?
This project (thanks to Open Discovery Project and Ellinogermaniki Agogi) is running for many years now and is getting bigger and wider because of its character to be both individual-centered and innovative in an unexpected way as a radically paradigm shifting initiative.
It has been presented in conferences in many different forms (for example, in conferences organized by the Hellenic Association for Counseling, the Hellenic Person-centered and Experiential Association and the Panhellenic Association of School (Pedagogy) Counselors).
The last two years I am running this program as a voluntary cultural educational program for students to develop their critical thinking and writing skills to produce original and innovative pieces of work according their true interests and needs.
11. What is supposed to be the follow-up of the initiative?
An Erasmus+ program in collaboration with European Schools, Countries, Universities, European Focusing Organizations and Organizations related to PCE (Person-centred & Experiential) Approach in Coaching, Counseling, Psychotherapy and Education.
Also, an European-wide training program under the umbrella of the European Focusing Association (EFA: http://efa-focusing.eu) for educators, trainers, etc.
12. Who can we contact to collect more information about the initiative? Please provide, name, organisation, function, localisation (city) and email address.

6. Please explain in maximum 100 words in which way this initiative is innovative from the point of view of the use of technology for educational purposes.
- Because of strong personal intrinsic motivation, the use of ICT with F&T-facilitated projects foster the use of leisure media for educational purposes, by enabling the blending of the academic with the personal. Individual creativity is augmented with social creativity as a natural expansion of relational, collaborative and interactional space of learning how to learn and as a personalization of the student’s learning path and adaptability. Learners create their own personalized (digital) “identity”.
- Based upon the real experiences of students, F&T help not to ignore the student’s technology and “engagement with technology” in the everyday life and their participatory culture as well as present generation everyday practices outside the school.
- Time and space are not used as means of control and as monitorial systems. New technology facilitates this direction.
- Teaching students how to be creative and innovative within and outside virtual spaces help them to use their virtual ‘autonomy’ for creative learning.
- Innovative teaching skills are required for the effective pedagogical use of new technologies otherwise students will replicate familiar forms and ideas using the new tools.
- Focusing and TAE innovation and creativity foster the potential of new technology of migrating to a more modular, student-centric approach to curricular architecture which is relevant for students’ real and future needs.
7. Please explain in maximum 100 words in which way this initiative is innovative from a pedagogical/educational point of view.
F&T:
- offer a detailed protocol to develop “a felt sense of a creative project into a full-blown product or theory”
- are highly experiential, inclusive, collaborative and interactive processes.
- are about the newness, the carrying-forward of our living and learning process.
- set forth the existential and experiential validity of the (living) body in education.
- constitute a corrective to an over-rationalistic approach to teaching ‘thinking skills’.
- offer a clear example of how learning dispositions may potentially be cultivated in educational settings.
- teach a wholesome understanding of the function of language.
- teach learners to retain their openness, to pass at will from conceptualized perception to direct virgin perception.
- they help us to critique our way of thinking and to get out of the prison of implicit assumptions.
- are compatible and combinable with other methodologies teachers are already using, e.g. a project in Project Based Learning or in Inquiring Based Learning (when it comes down to actual deep inquiring).
- reduce the stress of students and teachers, facilitate them to get in touch with and recognize their feelings and concerns, before moving on to actual learning.
- develop self-confidence by being an encouraging experience of self-worth.
